Friendly reminder: The structure of a body paragraph
Create a claim or topic sentence.
This needs to address the prompt directly and provide a clear direction that you will take within your body paragraphs.
Give context to what's happening in the graphic novel.
Before we give a quote, page, or panel, we need to situate what's happening in the graphic novel. Let us know what chapter and what's going on. Is Anoosh telling Marji a story about his life? Has the Black Friday Massacre happened and the family is unpacking it all?
Introduce evidence, cite the page, summarize or describe the panel.
Introduce the quote and cite it. Below are two examples.
In her confusion, Marji asks, "blah blah blah" (42).
On 70, at the top of the page, we see a newspaper with the headline reading, "Russian Spy Executed." Notably, this splash panel is borderless, which is a recurring choice that...
Explain the evidence, quote, or panel.
After you situate your reader, it's time to explain how we should read this. The whole point is to make sure our reader is on the same wavelength. For some pieces of evidence, one sentence will suffice, but for others, you'll need to unpack it fully for your reader, which can take 2-3 sentences.
Argue its importance.
Now, that we've explained the evidence, we need to argue why this is crucial, essential, necessary to understand. This is where we argue why this matters or is worthy of note.
